Carriage of grain in bulk IBC Bulk Code

Application

The Code applies to ships, regardless of size, engaged in the carriage of grain in bulk. The Code is a requirement of SOLAS, and is enforced for UK ships (and ships in UK waters) by the Merchant Shipping (Carriage of Cargoes) Regulations 1999 / SI 336. Individual ships may be exempt from complying with the Code due to the sheltered nature and conditions of the voyage; such an exemption would be granted by, or on behalf of, the Flag Administration.

Definition

The Code states that the term grain…

“…covers wheat, maize (corn), oats, rye, barley, rice, pulses, seeds and processed forms thereof, whose behaviour is similar to grain in its natural state.”
