Reports
to: Chief Engineer and First Engineer.
Directs:
Engine Room crew members as assigned by the Chief Engineer or First Engineer.
Works
with: Other Officers and Ratings, as appropriate
Position
duties and Responsibilities
To
familiarize himself with the policies and procedures of the Company’s SMS.
To
maintain a safe Engine Room watch and/or participate in the UMS duty system.
To
participate in the maintenance and repair of all vessel’s machinery and
associated equipment in an efficient
manner,
as directed by the Chief Engineer or First Engineer.
To be
present in the Engine Room during critical operations, whenever required by the
Chief Engineer.
To
ensure, with regard to the Engineering Department, that the vessel is seaworthy
at all times.
To have
knowledge of electrical systems and to assist the Electrician as required by
the First or Chief
Engineer.
To fully
assist and support the Safety Management Committee.
To study
and understand safety and environment protection regulations and procedures.
To take
an active part in the promotion of safety and environment protection amongst
all personnel.
To
instruct his subordinates on Company SMS procedures, ensuring their awareness
and full adherence.
To
ensure, by instructing and constant monitoring, his assigned subordinates'
adherence to safe working practices, and to ensure that all tasks are performed
in a safe and efficient manner.
To
diagnose machinery faults during his working periods, taking remedial actions
whenever possible and keeping the First and Chief Engineers informed of such
occurrences, as appropriate.
To
control and supervise Engine Room crew members assigned to specific duties
under his control, as directed by the First or Chief Engineer.
To assist
in the execution of the Planned Maintenance System, including its
documentation.
To ensure
that all engineering maintenance is carried out safely according to Company and
statutory Rules
and
Regulations.
To assist
the Chief Engineer in bunkering operations, ensuring that all SMS procedures
and regulations are
adhered
to.
To
perform chemical analysis, elaborating and maintaining corresponding records.
To assist
the First Engineer in all engineering maintenance and test of vessel’s
emergency and safety
equipment.
To assist
the First Engineer in the control of cleaning and anti-corrosion treatment of
machinery spaces.
To assist
the Chief Engineer in the monitoring and control of vessel’s equipment spare
parts.
To assist
the Chief Engineer in the monitoring and control of stores within engineering
department.
To assist
in the compilation of engineering records and documentation.
To assist
the First Engineer in the monitoring and training of subordinates and Engineering
Cadets.
To follow
and study the Second and First Engineer’s duties.
To ensure
the updating and maintenance of Oil Record Book.
Personal
Conduct
The Third
Engineer must, in his working and social behavior, constitute an example of
competency and irreproachable conduct for his subordinates. To transmit such an
image, the Third Engineer shall endeavor his best efforts to:
Demonstrate
loyalty and trustworthiness to his superiors.
Avoid any
signs of weakness that may endanger or diminish his authority.
Avoid
showing signs of alarm and anxiety when dealing with difficult situations as
this may be contagious and reduce the crew moral. Deal with his subordinates
with scrupulous fairness, showing concern for their welfare and avoiding any
attitudes
of discrimination in any respect.
Issue
clear and reasonable orders which do not endanger in excess the personal safety
of any crew member.
Avoid
actions or conduct that may be considered as abuse of power.
Set high standards of appearance
and encourage the same high standards in others.
