3rd Engineer / Junior First Engineer / GAS Engineer On LNG
Allocation of Duty –Junior First Engineer is to be employed as engineer in charge of cargo operations, at the
discretion of the Chief Engineer. Watch keeping employment applies to both conventional watches and periods
of UMS operation.
Cargo operations - Junior First Engineer is responsible for all cargo operations including cargo care in transit
under Chief Officer’s supervision. This includes assisting with loading and discharging operations, tank cool
down, warm up, inerting, pre-arrival test of ESDS, preparation of optic link, tension monitor equipment etc.,
checking of the cargo pump, electrical insulation and breaker condition prior to entering port and monitoring
operation of the gas compressors and other items as required.He must prepare necessary reports and records
for equipment’s under his charge.
Operation of Cargo Machinery - Junior First Engineer is particularly responsible to the Chief engineer for the
efficient operation, maintenance and repair of gas machinery, including HD, LD gas compressors, motors,
heaters, ventilation equipment etc., also nitrogen generators and inert gas plant.
Familiarity with Control, Piping and Electrical Systems - Junior First Engineer is to familiarize himself with
all cargo control piping systems and valves and electrical systems, so that in emergencies essential services
can be restored quickly and safely.
Repairs and Maintenance - Junior First Engineer is to be responsible, through the First Engineer, for the
maintenance and repair of any items of machinery or equipment (including gas compressors, heaters, inert gas
plant and associated equipment, nitrogen generators and associated compressors) listed in Manual of 
Ship Management System Annex 1 or as may be required by the Chief or First Engineer.
Junior First Engineer is to maintain cargo machinery room and motor room in a clean and safe condition and
control of bilge water / waste oil in the said rooms in co-ordination with First Engineer.
Spare Part Requirements and Repair Lists - Junior First Engineer must assist the First Engineer with the
preparation of spare part and repair lists, as required, for cargo part.
Instruction to Junior Staff - Junior First Engineer is to give every assistance to all junior staff to increase the
knowledge and efficiency of such staff working under their instructions.
Safety Requirements - The Junior First Engineer is to familiarize himself with the Company’s Health, Safety,
Quality and Environmental Protection Policy and Safety Regulations and must take due care for the health and
safety of himself and fellow seafarers. He is to co-operate in maintaining an environment, which is safe, and
without risk to health and must follow the recommendation contained in the ‘Code of Safe Working Practices for

Merchant Seamen’. He must become fully conversant with the methods of use of all safety equipment and
emergency procedures. In addition, he must co-operate with the Ship’s Safety Officer in the promotion of safety
throughout the engineering function.
Accountability - On all matters for which they are responsible, the Junior First Engineer shall be accountable
to, and report through the First Engineer in the first instance.
Personal Conduct
The Jr. First Engineer must, in his working and social behavior, constitute an example of competency and
irreproachable conduct for his subordinates. To transmit such an image, the Junior First Engineer shall
endeavor his best efforts to:
Demonstrate loyalty and trustworthiness to his superiors.
Avoid any signs of weakness that may endanger or diminish his authority
Avoid showing signs of alarm and anxiety when dealing with difficult situations as this may be contagious and
reduce the crew morale.
Deal with his subordinates with scrupulous fairness, showing concern for their welfare and avoiding any
attitudes of discrimination in any respect.
Issue clear and reasonable orders which do not endanger in excess the personal safety of any crew member.
Avoid actions or conduct that may be considered as abuse of power.
Set high standards of appearance and encourage the same high standards in others.
